The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames is located West of London City airport a distance of 20 miles that would take around an hour by taxi via the A1011 and A4. It is located in southwest London and forms part of Outer London having a population of 187,500 according to 2011 statistics.
The borough was formed in 1966 with the merging of the boroughs of Barnes and Richmond. The area has a long history with Hampton Court which was the home of Henry VIII, the buildings that remain of Richmond Palace, White Lodge at Richmond Park and Ham house that was built in the early 17th Century. Some of the boroughs most historical villages include Castelnau, Kew, Barnes, Mortlake, East Sheen, Richmond, Whitton, Twickenham, Petersham, Ham, Hanworth (in part), Teddington, Hampton Hill, Hampton, and Hampton Wick.
There is plenty to do in Richmond Upon Thames with many of the villages being ideal places to visit for a daytrip with busy High streets with a variety of local shops and services and, with a range of fantastic pubs, restaurants and takeaways. Nearly two-fifths of the borough consists of parks and open spaces and there are guided walking tours available which include themed walks to encompass some of the most important sites some of these include Wartime Walks, Pub Walks, Victorian Walks and Tudor Walks. Some of the best known parks include Richmond and Bushy parks (both former royal hunting grounds) Barnes Common, Sheen Common, Ham Common, Marble Hill Park and Old Deer Park.
